Understanding the Duration of Pilates Classes

When you think about diving into a Pilates class, one of the first questions that might come to mind is, "How long does a typical Pilates class last?" Generally, the duration of a Pilates session can range anywhere from 45 minutes to 55 minutes, depending on the type of class and the format.

Why is a Pilates Class Between 45 and 55 minutes?

If we date the reason why back throughout history, when Joesph Pilates created Contrology, and administered the repertoire in his NYC studio, the full choreography naturally took his students 45 minutes to complete.

When we talk about why they are between 45 and 55 minutes today, a few key reasons come to mind.

  1. This amount allows for a well rounded class with proper warm up, progression and stretch.

  2. Most individuals budget about an hour for physical fitness in their day and anything more or less can seem either "not worth it," or "too time consuming" against other priorities.

  3. This amount of time allows for enough of a buffer between sessions to allow for the change over, but not add inefficiencies to a business.

Whatever the length of time your class is scheduled for, be sure to arrive on time. Many studios will have a strict 5 minute cut off to enter class for safety reasons.
