Get Clarity and Move With Intention
So, you might be wondering, why do I need a mission and vision statement? A clear mission and vision for your business will guide you, keeping you aligned with your core purpose and aspirations. Both mission and vision statements act as foundational tools for your business strategy from Day 1. They help clarify priorities, inspire your team, and attract customers who share your values. They create a solid base to align your strategic goals and operational practices. Without them, it’s far too easy to get sidetracked or lose sight of your goals. They help you when you are making tough decisions, they keep you focused and saves you from trying to be everything to everyone. It helps you be firm and intentional in all areas---from big CEO decisions to day to day small ones you or your staff will make.
What is a Mission Statement?
A mission statement is essentially your studio's most important reason for existence. It articulates what your business does, who it serves, and how it serves them.
Creating Your Mission Statement
Crafting a mission statement doesn't have to challenging, but sometimes it can be. It may take several brainstorming sessions, bursts of inspiration, or editing sessions to get very clear.
Ask yourself (and your team if you have one) these questions:
1. What is your core purpose? -- What are the outcomes of coming to your space?
2. Who are you serving? -- Who are your customers?
3. What are your values? -- What are the thing that are important to you/ non-negotiable? What things set you apart in the way you treat your customers or the product/service you offer?
Your mission statement should be clear and concise, ideally 1-3 sentences. It's best to keep this straightforward and keep more descriptive or flowery language to your marketing campaign plans.
You, your staff, and any outsiders should be able to quickly understand what you do, who you serve and your attitude towards how you do it.
What is a Vision Statement?
While the mission statement lays out present day and the why, the vision statement points toward the future. It depicts what your organization aspires to be and achieve in the long run. A well-crafted vision statement inspires and motivates, serving as a beacon for your team as they work towards your shared goals. This statement is generally more aspirational in the way that it reads than the mission statement. It also leaves your business open-minded to grow beyond what you may believe it to be today.
Crafting Your Vision Statement
To create a meaningful vision statement, think about where you want your organization to be in the next five to ten years. Engage in open discussions, focus on aspirations, and encourage creativity. Formulate a statement that paints a vivid picture of your future. The goal is to inspire excitement and hope, energizing your team along the journey.
Examples of Mission and Vision Statements
Surprisingly, it has been quite difficult to find the mission and vision statements of even the most popular fitness studio franchises today. This indicates a clear competitive advantage to making one for your studio--gaining clarity helps you make better business decisions, to make your studio more competitive in the space it wants to compete in. If you have a better idea of who you are and what you want to be, you can make decisions that get you there faster, and with less wasted resources.
Here are a 2 examples of businesses who have a clear mission and vision statement clearly articulated:
LinkedIn
Mission Statement: "Connect the world’s professionals to make them more productive and successful."
Vision Statement: "Create economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce."
Nike
Mission Statement: "“To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world.”
Vision Statement: “To remain the most authentic, connected, and distinctive brand.”
These two examples are of very large organizations with multi-product/service offerings, so their mission and vision statements may feel much larger that yours might be. In the beginning, the more you can narrow your focus, while keeping your total available market large enough to meet your growth expectations, the better.
