Like many, I struggled to find a workout that I could maintain as a lifestyle change. I would sign up for a gym membership, get on an elliptical machine every day, and see no change in my body or wellbeing. I would try weight training, but I would get bored. I would try group training programs, but feel intimidated by those around me. Most of all, I hated the part of fitness culture that yelled demands at me to go faster, longer, harder as motivation to push me past my limits. I would end up feeling defeated, weak, and injured. Then I started Pilates.
Doing Pilates was the first time I enjoyed working out. It was low-impact and I was able to gain strength, and make progress without feeling mental and physical pain. It really turned the old saying, "no pain, no gain" upside down. Part of my newfound "a wealth of gain with no pain" reality had to do with the Pilates method, and part of it had to do with my fantastic instructors.
Pilates can be intimidating. The exercises look complex. The photos of women and men that do Pilates often don't look like me. Sometimes the cues make very little sense—what does “knit your ribs" even mean?! That all changes with the right instructor. Everybody can do Pilates, it just takes the right teacher.
When I first started journey to become a Pilates Teacher, one of the things that drove me the most was my desire to be the type of instructor I had when I first started classes and couldn't hold my legs in tabletop for more than a few seconds. They were patient, caring, non-judgmental and guided me to become stronger. I made progress without feeling confused or frustrated. They were knowledgeable without being pretentious. They were leaders without egos. They recognized that the goal wasn't to do Pilates perfectly in that moment. They understood the exercises and how to cue them with words that I recognized. And they made me feel good about myself, even on my worst days.
