Why Choose Grippy Socks for Pilates?

If you've ever stepped into a Pilates studio, you've probably seen others wearing grippy socks. It's possible that your studio requires them to participate in class. These special socks have rubberized grips on the soles, designed to enhance traction. But are they really necessary? Let’s dive into the pros and cons of grippy socks to better understand if they are necessary or just unnecessary expense or way for a studio to make more money.

Pros of Grippy Socks

  • Safety and Stability: With their non-slip soles, they provide extra grip on the equipment, when compared to non-grip socks. This stability allows you to focus on your form and technique without worrying about slipping.

  • Sanitation: When using equipment that is shared, grip socks offer an additional layer of cleanliness. While equipment is wiped down after each use, feet are placed on areas where hands and sometimes even your face will rest, so wearing grip socks reserved for class helps keep shared spaces less icky.

  • Warmth: When compared to bare feet, grip socks can keep your feet warm, allowing for increased flexibility, especially in cool studios.

  • Personal Style and Fashion: They come in various colors and designs, allowing you to express your individuality while you work out.

Cons of Grippy Socks

  • Sensory Issues: The added texture may change the way you feel about certain movements, and not everyone finds them comfortable during their entire session. It might take some time to adjust.

  • Potential for reduced proprioception: Increased grip can take away from your natural ability to feel the floor beneath you.

  • Additional Expense: Many popular brands cost over $20/pair! (Check out sites like Amazon for more affordable options.) The rubber grips can wear out, which means you may need to replace them.

So while grip socks are not required to do Pilates on your own equipment, there is valid reasons for studios to require grips socks within their studios. If you are on a budget, consider purchasing some before visiting the studio so that you are not required to purchase premium priced socks directly to attend class. (Some studios or teachers carry loaners -- never hurts to ask if you forget yours!)
