What is the NCCA?

The NCCA (National Commission for Certifying Agencies) is an organization that sets high-quality standards for professional certification programs. It ensures that certifications in fields like fitness, healthcare, and other professions are credible, reliable, and meet industry standards.

The Role of NCCA in Pilates Certification

Some Pilates certification programs seek accreditation from the NCCA to enhance their credibility and ensure that graduates meet established professional standards. This accreditation serves as validation for instructors and participants alike, promoting safe and effective practices in Pilates instruction. However, having a NCCA accreditation is not required, and does not always mean that the program is any better than one that does not have the accreditation.

Requirements to be NCCA Accredited

According to the Institute for Credentialing Excellence as of Feb 2025, in order for a certification program to gain NCCA accreditation, it must:

  1. Administer the program for a minimum of 1-year or have had 500 candidates assessed, whichever comes first.

  2. Develop a Certification Program that includes valid testing, and competency-based assessments that would determine if the student meets standard requirements to practice in a professional, roll, skill or specialty.

  3. Follow NCCA Standards covering exam development, fairness, security, and recertification.

  4. Submit an Application providing detailed documentation showing how your program meets NCCA standards.

  5. Pass an Independent Review to ensure it meets their accreditation criteria.

As of this post, the only Pilates Certification that is NCCA accredited is the National Pilates Certification Program (NPCP).
